Whether you’re a first time mother or a mother of 5, finding out you’re pregnant is often both thrilling and intimidating. At Cherokee Women’s Health we pay special attention to your physical and emotional needs, giving you the smoothest OB experience possible. We’ll take you step-by-step through the process of your pregnancy test, choosing an obstetrician or midwife you can trust, and getting started with your first appointment. When you arrive for your first OB appointment, make sure you bring your insurance information, medical history, and identification. Before meeting your obstetrician or midwife, we’ll ask you to fill out paperwork detailing your medical history, any current medications, and other pertinent information. This allows us to give you the best possible medical care.
At the beginning of your appointment, the ultrasound technician will use a trans vaginal probe to get a first look at your baby. As the baby grows, we’ll be able to show you a clearer picture of your child. The initial ultrasound allows us to see how far along you are so we can determine your due date. After the ultrasound a nurse will check your weight, take a blood sample, and collect a urine sample. These tests are standard for every appointment during your pregnancy.
After your nurse finishes these basic tests, you’ll meet your obstetrician or midwife. You should feel completely comfortable discussing any questions or concerns about the pregnancy with your OB professional. After discussing what to expect and answering any questions, your medical professional will perform a pelvic exam to make sure your cervix is closed and ready for pregnancy. If necessary, your obstetrician or midwife may also perform a pap smear.
Feeling more secure in your upcoming journey? You should always feel comfortable contacting your healthcare advisors during each stage of your pregnancy. Before you leave, we’ll give you a goody bag with prenatal vitamins and pregnancy literature to help you throughout the process. Schedule your next appointment on your way out and save our number in your phone – you never know when a concern might arise that requires the expertise of our all star OB staff.
Congratulations! We’re excited to help you through every step of this life changing journey.
