What to Expect from Your First OB Appointment

A first appointment with an obstetrician or midwife gives mothers the opportunity to share information, ask questions, and develop trust with their healthcare professional. Set aside aside at least an hour for your first appointment at Cherokee Women’s Health. Here’s what to expect during your appointment:

  • Paperwork. After you check in with your insurance card, our team will ask you to share information about your pregnancy and medical history.
  • Questions. Write down any questions you have for your obstetrician.
  • Prenatal ultrasound. During your first prenatal ultrasound, our technicians will use a trans vaginal probe to determine your due date. It’s often difficult to get a clear picture during early pregnancy, so some mothers may need to wait a few weeks for a clear image of their baby.
  • Weight, Height, Blood Pressure, and Urine Sample. Just like any other doctor’s appointment, Cherokee Women’s Health uses these standard tests to monitor the health of you and your baby.
  • Meet Your Doctor, and Ask Questions. Your obstetrician or midwife is your number one resource during your pregnancy. You should feel 100% comfortable asking your women’s health professional about any pregnancy question, big or small.
  • Pelvic Exam. Your doctor wants to guarantee the health of you and your child. During the appointment, your obstetrician will conduct a pelvic exam to make sure your cervix is ready for pregnancy. Your physician may also do a pap smear if needed.
  • Goody bag. Who doesn’t love free treats? Your OB will provide you with prenatal vitamins, pregnancy literature, and other helpful, early pregnancy goodies before you leave.
  • Bloodwork. Our nurses will run several tests before you leave to ensure everything goes smoothly with your pregnancy.
  • Schedule an appointment. We want every new mother to feel comfortable and informed after leaving our offices. After your first obstetrician appointment, schedule your next prenatal checkup in two to four weeks as recommended by your doctor.
