What to Expect at Cherokee Women’s Health

pregnant woman standing and holding on to her stomachOnce you see the plus sign, double lines, or word “pregnant” on your home pregnancy kit, it’s time to schedule your first appointment. Read the bios of our fully trained staff of obstetricians and midwives to find the perfect caregiver to help you on your journey to motherhood. Once you make that first appointment, here’s what to expect.

  • Paperwork. Please arrive early to your first appointment. You will be asked for your insurance card. Then you’ll fill out paperwork to help us make your journey easier, safer, and healthier for you and your precious cargo.
  • First prenatal ultrasound. The ultrasound technician will bring you from the waiting room to a private ultrasound room. In early pregnancy, the technician uses a trans vaginal probe to see the baby more clearly. If you can’t see your baby quite yet, don’t worry! It is sometimes difficult to get a clear picture in the first weeks of pregnancy. The first ultrasound helps us to determine your due date.
  • Height, weight, blood pressure, and urine sample. In this regard, your first OB appointment is no different than any other trip to the doctor. Expect these basic tests at every appointment throughout your pregnancy.
  • Consultation with your physician. Your first consultation allows you to meet your physician, get to know your doctor or midwife, and ask any questions you may have about your pregnancy. You should feel completely comfortable discussing your concerns with your OB. After all, not only is your doctor an experienced professional, he or she is dedicated to giving you the best possible care. After the consultation, there will be a pelvic exam to make sure your cervix is closed and ready for pregnancy. The doctor may also do a pap smear.
  • Goody bag. Here’s the fun part. Stock up on prenatal vitamins and important pregnancy literature, courtesy of Cherokee Women’s Health!
  • Blood work. Before you check out, we run a few bloodwork tests to ensure everything with your pregnancy is going smoothly.
  • Make your next appointment. Before you leave, schedule your next prenatal appointment. It should be in two to four weeks (at the recommendation of your physician).

We’re thrilled to undertake this journey with you. For more information, contact Cherokee Women’s Health.
