Abnormal or Irregular Bleeding

Many women experience heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding at some point in their lives. There are many reasons why a woman's cycle can become irregular; it isn't healthy for a woman to bleed either too much or too little. We evaluate patients with these complaints every day – there are simple and safe solutions to address these problems.

Although every woman experiences her period differently, we define a normal, healthy period by a few standard criteria.

Normal bleeding:

  • Occurs about every 25-31 days
  • Lasts 4-5 days
  • Totals 2-3 tablespoons

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB):

  • Can last longer than 7 days
  • May require frequent change of protection, or double protection
  • May include large blood clots in your flow
  • May cause tiredness, fatigue or shortness of breath (symptoms of anemia)

The best way to take control of heavy periods is to let us know you’re having symptoms. We recommend taking the short online quiz below, and sharing the results with us at your next appointment.

Cryoablation

In many cases, we can eliminate heavy bleeding with a simple office procedure called Cryoablation.

This painless office treatment uses sub-zero temperatures to reduce the lining of the uterus, thus reducing or eliminating heavy menstrual flow. Ultrasound is used to help guide these freezing substances to the treatment site inside your body in this pain-free procedure, which is performed right in our office.

If you experience heavy or irregular periods, make an appointment with your physician to find out which treatment option is best for you.
